Ooh… *

My future is secure, the job is in a great location, future prosperity…what more can I ask for!? Well there is a teeny weeny point, but I’m sure by the end of this year, my questions would have been answered 🙂

A different market and environment to my usual comfty zone in the motor trade industry, but it’s definitely a challenge I’m happy to take on. It’s been a long time coming, and I know that my perseverance and determination allowed to push on when all seems to be lost. Those days were hard, but no more!!

I haven’t updated my blog as frequently as I should do, but it’s good to express and release my thoughts when I feel I need to. I hope everybody out there are doing great and are succeeding in life, never give up!

How to have a good first day at work

You did it! You got the job! Well done, it’s not easy to get a job in the current market and now you’ll wanting to be make a good impression. Starting a new job can be a nerve-wracking time, even for people who have worked at lots of jobs, so you’re bound to be nervous. Will they like me? Will I like them? What will the work be like?

The main thing is not to worry and stress about your first day. It’s meant to be an exciting, positive time. Just to be sure, have a quick read of our guide to having a good first day at work.

1. Plan ahead

First up, think about what you’re going to wear – check the office dress code, first – and make sure you’re well presented. Remember, people will be meeting you for the first time and making immediate judgements, and you want to make sure you fit in. Jeans and a craggy T-shirt in a smart business environment won’t sell your professionalism.

2. Say cheese!

Now, we’re not saying you have to beam like a Cheshire cat all day, but you want people to warm to you and everyone likes a friendly, smiley new starter…

3. Be confident

You may have been voted ‘most confident classmate’ at uni but now you’re in the workplace you’re suddenly unsure of yourself. EVERYONE feels this way on their first day, whether they’re a first-jobber or not. You don’t know anyone and you have a lot to learn, so it’s to be expected. Now is the time to fake it. Don’t show you’re scared, be friendly with people and show you’re keen to get started and learn. Nobody expects you to know anything on your first day!

4. Make introductions…

Your manager is likely to introduce you around but if you bump into people in the kitchen you don’t recognise make sure you say hi and introduce yourself. Even if people work in different departments, chances are you may have to work with them in the future and it always pays to be friendly. You never know, you might even get a doughnut out of it.

5. …And remember names

There’s nothing more awkward than forgetting someone’s name. Nobody remembers all the names of all the people they meet on their first day – you can even make a joke of it as you’re introduced: ‘Sorry if I forget your name, I’ve met about a hundred people today, but it’s really lovely to meet you!’ for example. People won’t mind. If, after a couple of weeks and several reminders you STILL don’t remember then the joke wears a bit thin!

6. If you’re not sure, ask

They say there’s no such thing as a stupid question. Well, maybe asking your boss why the sky is blue is dumb, but for anything work related it’s better to ask as much as you can in your first couple of weeks. Your boss and colleagues won’t mind – they were in your shoes once – and they’ll be glad you’re showing an interest. Just don’t ask the same question over and over again. Pick things up quickly and ‘stupid’ questions will soon be forgotten.

7. Nobody likes a know-it-all

This is your first ‘proper’ job and you still have a lot to learn. Chances are your colleagues are also grads – grads with experience – so trying to tell them their job isn’t a good way of endearing yourself to the team.

8. Know your place

Your manager should talk you through company hierarchy on your first day, but if not try and find out how the company is structured. You need to know who your boss is, and your boss’ boss… If you’re aware of exactly where you sit within the team you’ll be able to avoid any awkward foot-in-mouth moments.

9. Gossip girl, gossip boy

Don’t, whatever you do, get involved in gossip on your first day. Every office has politics and people who like – and indeed dislike – each other. You don’t want to get a reputation for a gossip or a backstabber, so it’s best to avoid letting your guard down straight away. Just subtly change the subject if you feel gossip brewing.

10. Enjoy yourself!

Your first day should be enjoyable. You won’t have a lot of work to do yet and you’re able to get to know people and learn what the next few months and years of your working life will hold for you. Don’t be so stressed that you forget to have fun!

Part Of The List

Yesterday, I was browing through my Ne-Yo playlist, and I thought to myself there should be more music I’d downloaded a few years back. Connected my external hard drive and found loads, but a part of me regrets that decision. But why?

It brings back memories…sad memories…memories of young love. Some of his unreleased songs were good, and it was good reminiscing but it wouldn’t make the cut on my playlist. While a few other struct a nerve. “Don’t Fall in Love” and this song “Part of the List”.

I wondered to myself last night why I didn’t add this song to my playlist when this song is one of my favourites. But the longer the night went, the longer it started to hit me, and it came to me…this song is painful to hear. It actually makes me have tears in my eyes because it’s emotional for me. I have added this song to my playlist last night, but I wonder how long will this last, because it pains me to listen to it every day 😦
